Ace Music of the Year 2019

Recommended Posts

This should be a rolling list for people's records of 2019. I'll post my top 20 after I've finished it on Facebook, but here's a list of stuff that was new to me in 2019 that I thought was very good, along with a Spotify playlist of whatever is available.

Su Tissue - Salon de Musique - thanks again to @Brent Lampton for this piece of Reichian outburst, really beautiful.
Michael O'Shea - Michael O'Shea - Irish street musician 'discovered' by two lads from Wire, got a reissue this year that is really nice
Fred Frith - Gravity
Fred Frith - No Birds - two different Frith records but completely unalike. No Birds is the beginning of post-rock and ambient while Gravity is ravishing and exploratory.
Anthony Moore - Flying Doesn't Help - like if Eno kept making pop records
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality - never heard in full, feels like their best
Pentangle - Willy O'Winsbury - probably the best song I heard this year, hands down
Team Dresch - Personal Best - made up for a disappointing SK record, this is like riot grrl meets Q & Not U or something
Mark Hollis - S/T - heard ages ago but his death hurt and then this was re-released
Arthur Russell - Iowa Dream - this made me realise he kind of invented Ariel Pink
His Name Is Alive - All The Mirrors - was never a fan of the later stuff but this early ambient stuff rules
Black Dice - Natty Light - from when they were a bratty punk band, absolutely dire playing but an amazing document of a time
Wooten Family - Present Joys - got way into sacred harp singing this year and this one threw me esp when @cuppatea pointed out basically Animal Collective nicked it
Deliluh - Day Catcher - think @Teb was on these first but I heard them through our guitarist, great slack indie vibe
Gentle Giant - various - thanks PhilPub! no one amazing album but lots of very good songs here and there
Van Der Graaf Generator - some amazing sounds from this lot, can see why the cool post-punkers liked them even though they were definitely on the prog side of art rock
Peter Hammill - Over - and yet VdGG's singer would turn out these tender non-prog miserable solo records, this one is incredible
EXEK - Ahead of Two Thoughts - best post-punk record that I heard this year is from 2017...very PIL...industrial and dub vibes really work. Aussie nihilist vibe.
Zazen Boys - Honnoji - incredible Japanese math punk act, the band the singer from the Dino Jr influenced Number Girl formed. Battles-ish?
Lime - I Don't Want To Lose You - not a huge italo fan but this single is new to me and it RULES
Bjork - Vulnicura - thanks to the Bjork a week, this was my favourite, an absolute brutalisation of the soul set to music
Electric Light Orchestra - Letter From Spain - deep cut of the year

dunno why that won't embed but it does work.

I'd personally put National Service against any record not here. Arrogant, sure, but I am proud of it and think it stands up.

Ariel Pink and Matana Roberts two of the most consistent artists of the decade. No bad releases but couldn't put them all in.

I also really liked everything (or nearly everything) this decade by Kendrick Lamar, Julia Kent, The Intelligence, Tortoise, The Oh Sees, Field Music, The Field, Caribou, JPEGMAFIA, Obnox, Kamasi Washington, Gary War, Suede, Scott Walker, Bill Callahan, Dam Funk, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Danny Brown, Vince Staples, Sightings, Pan American, Anjou, and Grass Widow.
